From a Yoga Calm Instructor
The Tree of Light is a beautiful story about a seed leaving it’s mother. The seed becomes a tree and has its challenges along the way. Some of the universal truths included are “look within to help you find the answers,” we have light within us and “forgive.” The illustrations are light and airy and go well with the story.
I am a Yoga Calm instructor and have used this book during large group reading. The book goes along the Yoga Calm theme of strength. The book includes examples of grounding, slow and deep breathing and flexibility. The students really enjoy the book. During Yoga Calm I like to use the phrase “shine your light” from the book. Our light is our prana.

Loved this book! My little listeners were drawn first to the eye-catching colors and illustrations in Tree of Light, and then to its compelling story of friendship and forgiveness. I love that this book teaches children about their inner strength, but also celebrates our connection to nature—and to one another.
A Healing Work of Heart
Tree of Light is a gentle, calming tale of friendship and the peaceful refrain of nature. The story teaches readers to look within themselves for answers. There are lots of opportunities within the story for listeners to physically act out the tree’s experience as it moves through the many seasons of life. Listeners can also chirp along with Indigo the bird. Tree of light is a healing work of heart that can be used to help heal and restore!
Enlightening and lovely story!
This book is absolutely amazing! My own children loved it and my 3rd grade students begged for it over and over! We used it during our Earth day unit. The children are able to actually relate to the Tree and feel empathy for it in this well-written, beautifully illustrated and enlightening story.
universal message
I love the analogy of the tree growing, the broken branch and the idea of the cycles of life. I think the illustrations are amazing and the message is a wonderful one to send out into the world. The words are simple and understandable and the message is universal and needed.
Inspirational Guidance for Kids and Parents too!
My son and I love reading Tree of Light together! As we journey through the different developmental stages, the book continues to give us new joy, new questions, new ideas. The bright illustrations help my son connect with the characters and give us lots to talk about together. The characters help him process, develop, and express his empathy, an essential social and emotional skill. The story also helps us process and work with other important themes, emotions, and skills, such as pain, self-love, friendship, self-reliance, asking for help, resilience, fear, change, making mistakes, accidents, vulnerability, healing, inner listening, and realizing our own abilities. I know the book will inspire more conversations and realizations in both of us as he experiences each stage of childhood. Aaa’Lee will be a character we remember to look to in times of change, difficulty, or when we need some guidance!
This Book has a positive and empowering message for children of all ages.
This book is so beautifully done with a powerful message for children. My kids love to emulate the actions of the tree and are learning life long ways to work with energy through it. We need more empowering children’s books like this. I look forward to more books by this author.

This is a beautiful story with so many positive messages for kids and adults alike. Tree of Light uses the seemingly simplistic story of a tree to explain the complex wonder of nature and to tell the story of realizing personal growth, finding inner strength, forgiving and taking care of others, enjoying the beauty of life, becoming stronger with age, and using your wisdom to form the next generation. It is beautifully told and illustrated and is a must read.

Tree of Light packs big meaning into the life’s journey of one tiny seed. A universal message of overcoming fear, and finding the strength and courage within one’s self, no matter how small, to navigate the winds of change, no matter fierce they may be! The bright and beautiful illustrations are also a delight to the eye.
A Beautifully Written and Illustrated Book
I read Tree of Light and immediately knew it would be a wonderful book to read to the grandchildren. It’s a simple, easy read with a message to “Remember to shine your light.” There are storyplayer activities you may choose to do if you so desire. The vibrant colors of the book are a delight. I highly recommend this sweet, relaxing, courageous story for bedtime reading to children. You won’t be disappointed. Beautiful book, J.Y. Reinfeld!!
Sweetest bedtime story
This is such an inspirational story for children. Beautifully taught lessons about standing on your own, and friendship. Great to read with your child at night before bed. Everyone will go to bed peacefully and prepared for sweet dreams.
Beautiful illustrations, peaceful and insightful story
This story provides many opportunities for its readers; its themes range from introspection to forgiveness, with alternate themes like the emotional and physical strength of the body, mind, and heart, connection with nature, and friendship. There are so many different ways to look at this book as a discussion tool for many important topics with children. Its illustrations are absolutely beautiful- with a soft and friendly presentation, and warm representative colors. It has a spiritual impact, while being accessible to any type of reader who may be dealing with the above listed themes in one way or another. And aren’t we all? Such a special book. I highly recommend it to readers of all ages!

I enjoyed this story tremendously, and I can’t wait to share it with others. The story is so sweet and inspirational, but I especially loved the bold, color saturated illustrations that fill each page with life.

TREE OF LIGHT is an important book, especially in these stressful times. When I share this with children, it prompts discussions of feelings and important life skills such as looking inside ourselves for the answer, forgiveness, and shining our light for others to see. Its gorgeous illustrations complement the text.
It’s fun to allow listeners to act out certain parts of TREE OF LIGHT such as the swooshing wind that shakes leaves and the seed that flies, spins and twirls. Other lines that inspire movement are “Aaa-Lee wiggled her roots into the earth. She reached for the sun. And she breathed in and out.”
TREE OF LIGHT also lends itself to relaxing bedtime stretches and helps children have a restful sleep.
